Algol (Beta Persei) is a fixed star near 26° Taurus in the tropical zodiac. Traditional astrologers associate it with danger and Medusa’s myth, while modern interpretations explore themes of intense emotion, creativity, and personal transformation.
1. The Astronomical Phenomenon: The Winking Eye
Algol is an eclipsing multiple-star system whose main eclipsing pair dims roughly every 2 days, 20 hours, and 49 minutes when one star passes in front of the other.
To the ancients, this rhythmic “blinking” was seen as the literal eye of a demon or the severed head of Medusa. In 2026, we view this not as an omen of evil, but as a cosmic metaphor for the cycle of light and shadow. It represents the necessity of temporary darkness to achieve a greater manifestation of light.
2. Mythology: Beyond the Horror of Medusa
The name Algol is derived from the Arabic Ra’s al-Ghul, meaning “The Head of the Demon.” In Greek mythology, it marks the head of the Gorgon, Medusa, held by the hero Perseus.
The Decapitation Metaphor
While traditional texts link Algol to literal decapitation or hanging, modern psychological astrology views this as:
- Losing One’s Head: Giving in to blind rage or hysteria.
- Transcending the Ego: The “beheading” of the ego to allow the higher self to take over.
- The Power of the Gaze: The ability to face “ugly” truths that turn others to stone.
3. Algol at 26° Taurus: The Earthly Volcano
Taurus is a sign of stability, wealth, and the physical body. When the volatile energy of Algol is placed in the fixed earth of Taurus, it creates a “volcanic” effect. It is a slow buildup of pressure that eventually explodes with world-changing force.
The Precision of the 26° Mark
In fixed star astrology, the Orb (the distance of influence) is tight.
- Conjunction Orb (25°–27° Taurus): Some astrologers use this approximate range when comparing Algol with natal planets or chart angles.
- The Precession Factor: Earth’s axial precession shifts Algol’s tropical zodiac longitude by roughly 1° every 72 years; its quoted degree depends on the epoch.

5. Algol in the 12 Houses: Where Does the Intensity Reside?
Astrologers interpret Algol’s natal house placement as a symbolic theme for exploring personal challenges and strengths.
- 1st House (Self/Appearance): You possess an intense, magnetic “gaze.” People may find you intimidating or irresistibly attractive.
- 2nd House (Finances/Values): Massive fluctuations in wealth. You must learn that your value isn’t tied to material possessions.
- 4th House (Home/Roots): Intense family secrets or a powerful ancestral lineage that requires “cleansing.”
- 7th House (Relationships): Attracting “intense” partners. Relationships are the mirror for your shadow work.
- 10th House (Career/Legacy): You are a “Disruptor.” Your career likely involves transformation or dealing with the darker aspects of society.
6. 2026-2027: The Uranus-Algol Connection
Uranus crossed Algol’s approximate Taurus longitude in 2024–2025. On April 25, 2026, it re-entered Gemini, ending its Taurus transit.
- The Trigger: Uranus crossed approximately 26° Taurus in 2024–2025, a transit astrologers symbolically associate with disruption and change.
- Financial Shifts: Astrologers associate Taurus with resources and Uranus with innovation, offering symbolic themes for discussing changing financial systems.
- Personal Impact: Natal placements near 26° Taurus may invite reflection on the earlier Uranus–Algol transit, without guaranteeing personal transformation.
7. Working with the Demon: Remedies and Protection
A. The “Grounding” Technique
Algol is Earth-based. When you feel overwhelmed by its intensity, use the Earth. Gardening, walking barefoot (earthing), and mineral-rich diets (root vegetables) help “sink” the high-voltage Algol energy.
B. The Shield of Objectivity
Perseus killed Medusa by looking at her reflection in a mirror, not directly. In life, this means detachment. When facing Algol-type crises, do not react emotionally. Use your logic (the shield) to navigate the situation.
C. Creative Sublimation
Pablo Picasso transformed unconventional ideas into influential art. Regardless of your Algol placement, creative expression can offer a healthy outlet for difficult emotions.
8. Case Studies: Famous Algol Placements
- Princess Diana: Her humanitarian legacy inspires reflection on compassion and public responsibility.
- Albert Einstein: His scientific achievements transformed our understanding of physics.
- John Lennon: His music and activism left a lasting cultural legacy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is Algol always bad? A: No. It is simply “unfiltered power.” Think of it like a nuclear reactor. If managed well, it provides infinite energy. If neglected, it causes a meltdown.
Q: Does Algol cause literal death? A: No scientific evidence links Algol to death. Modern astrologers often interpret its symbolism through endings and personal transformation.
Q: How do I know if I have Algol? A: Check your birth chart for any planet or point at 25, 26, or 27 degrees of Taurus.
Summary
Algol is not a star for the faint of heart. It is the star of the Hero. It asks us to look at the parts of life and ourselves that are “ugly,” “monstrous,” or “frightening.” By facing the Demon Star, we stop being victims of our shadow and start becoming masters of our destiny.

- Respect the Orb: Focus on the 26° Taurus mark.
- Channel the Rage: Use the intensity for creative or social reform.
